It is music rooted in the past, but not a past that ever actually happened. One might hear Balkan melody, Old-time banjo and Brass Band pomp wrapped up in Tin Pan Alley melodrama. These are songs that speak of such esoteric topics as abandoned funeral trains, Messianic visions in the Canadian wilderness, and ill-fated amateur space exploration.<br /><br />On stage, Boxcar Aldous Huxley are a cavalcade of dapper tweeds, inaccurate historical lecturing and rattertrap musicality, trading rickety banjo clatterings one moment for ornate choral refrains the next. The harmonium wheezes; the clarinet shrieks; Stephen Foster revolves slowly in his grave.<br /><br />The band&rsquo;s debut foray into the world of phonographic recordings is the inaugural release of Nanny State Records of Bristol, England. &ldquo;The Initial Proceedings of the Boxcar Aldous Huxley Historiographical Society&rdquo; was released in Spring 2011 on 10&rdquo; vinyl, with accompanying digital download options for those interested in such things. Presented in hand-letterpressed 78RPM-style outer sleeves, the first pressings further reward the purchaser with a &lsquo;bonus track&rsquo; entitled The Saw in the Ointment, published as a written score for solo piano. <br /><br />The central theme of the record, though stated with such subtlety as to be barely apparent, is a roiling critique of the &lsquo;Chorleywood&rsquo; industrial baking process.<br /><br />They will play for shelter, liquor, or cold, hard cash.
